After you decided to start your PhD in Germany, you have to negotiate several bureaucratic hurdles. Do not be worried, your colleagues and we are happy to help you throughout your residence in Magdeburg.
The following information will help you to prepare your departure to Magdeburg and will give you an idea which formalities you have to deal with briefly after your arrival.

First steps to start your PhD:
Check of international degrees for German equivalency
The University’s office for doctorate studies and long-term study fees, K31 will check whether your international graduation is sufficient to start the PhD at the OVGU.
Before you can admit at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, you have to send the following documents to K31:
- application as doctoral candidate at the OVGU
- matriculation form international (here for Germans) the OVGU will ask for notarized copies of your certificates
- copies of your certificates
Admit at the Faculty of Natural Sciences as PhD student
- help to the related applications you find here or contact us
- you have to submit the following documents to the dean’s office:
- Application of admission as PhD at the FNW
- application as doctoral candidate at the OVGU
- matriculation form international (here for Germans) the OVGU will ask for notarized copies of your certificates
- registration as doctoral candidate according to the Hochschulstatistikgesetz
- CV
- supervision agreement
- copies of certificates (including transcript of records)
- result of check of equivalency (for international degrees)
Note: For registration at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, you have to select a research area (areas of expertise) for your PhD. According to that decision, a commission will decide about your admission (with or without additional requirements). If you have to attend additional courses please contact Nicole Zenker from the Master Integrative Neurosciences.

Matriculation at OVGU
If you submit your matriculation form (En/Ger) to the deans office, you will be matriculated automatically – you will be informed about that via personal letter. Here, they will also ask for notarized copies of your certificates.
